Although the Society of Jesus was an exclusively male order, women were present from its inception, either directly influencing Ignatius of Loyola or in the experience of Ignatian spirituality, with some even being accepted into the order as Jesuits. This course will highlight the historical importance of the feminine in the Ignatian tradition.

In this course, we will explore the history and example of the many women who lived with Ignatius of Loyola and influenced the development of his theology, manifested in the presence of the feminine in his Spiritual Exercises. We will also study the lives of women who became spiritual guides for other women from the 17th to the 20th centuries, based on Ignatian principles. Finally, we will discuss the paths of contemporary experience of Ignatian spirituality after the Second Vatican Council, discovering tools to translate and adapt the Spiritual Exercises to the situations and experiences of women.
